The Online Edition of The Unicode Standard, Version 3.0

This is the online edition of The Unicode Standard, Version 3.0 (ISBN 0-201-61633-5). It consists of PDF files, an online glossary, links to the charts, technical reports, and other files listed in the left-hand column. The Acrobat Reader software for reading PDFs can be downloaded for free from the Adobe Systems web site.

Purpose of the Online Edition

The files provide online access to The Unicode Standard, Version 3.0. In a few cases, the material has been slightly modified for the online edition. The online edition  is not meant as a substitute for the printed book. The Consortium strongly discourages using the PDF and other files in an attempt to create a printed copy of book. Printing from the PDF files has been disabled. Normative references to the Unicode Standard, Version 3.0 should use the printed edition.

How to Find Information in the Online Edition

If you have a term which is in the index, you can find that term by searching in the General Index, which is part of the Back Matter. Once a term is found in the index, clicking on the term in your browser should take you to that page of the standard. This works for most script names and general concepts. For detailed information, load the appropriate chapter and use the "Find" command in the Adobe Acrobat Reader to search for words or phrases.

Later Versions of the Standard

Unicode 3.0 has been and will be updated by later versions the standard. These updates do not replace the bulk of the existing material of Unicode 3.0, but they may add characters, correct or extend the character properties in the Unicode Character Database or have a significance for the interpretation of some aspects of the standard.
For a formal description of what constitutes Version 3.0.0, as well as information about updates and minor revisions, see Versions of the Unicode Standard. For more information about the Unicode Standard and how to use it see the overview page.
This online edition is simply a snapshot in time of the original Unicode 3.0, except where noted below. In particular, the PDF files have not been modified to reflect the corrections found on the Updates and Errata page.
The online code charts may contain characters added after the publication of the Unicode Standard, Version 3.0. To find out whether a particular character was part of Version 3.0, please consult either the printed edition of The Unicode Standard, Version 3.0 or version 3.0.0 of the Unicode Character Database.
The links to the material from the CD-ROM and Online Glossary on this page consist of the most current versions.
